Tours
Visiting our cathedral, you are welcome to look around on your own. Alternatively, we have a number of tour options available.
Guided Tours
Experience a guided tour with one of our knowledgeable volunteer guides—a wonderful way to explore our Cathedral’s captivating history, uncover its hidden treasures and secrets, and admire its stunning architecture.
Regular Tours
Our regular tours take place on Saturdays at 10.30am. Remaining at ground level, these tours explore the key features of the building’s history and architecture and last about an hour. Highlights include the oldest Anglican church architecture in South Africa, the fossil-rich columns in the nave, the Lady Chapel, the Sanctuary, the stained-glass windows, the brasswork, and the richly carved wooden decorations.
These tours are free of charge, and no booking is required. However, if you’d like to make a donation at the end of your tour, it will be gratefully received.
Occasionally our regular tours cannot take place due to events taking place in the cathedral, please check our What’s On page for information on these events and/or email us at admin@grahamstowncathedral.org to check if there is a regular tour taking place when you plan to visit.
Booked Tours
Looking for a more exclusive cathedral experience? Our private group tours offer an intimate journey through our magnificent cathedral's history and architecture. Led by expert volunteer guides, these customizable tours allow groups to explore at their leisure while focusing on areas of specific interest—from the Cathedral’s precious treasures and stunning stained glass to its artistic features and Gothic Revival architecture. Group tours can be booked at a time that suits you, dependent on availability.
These tours must be booked in advance and are chargeable, please email admin@grahamstowncathedral.org to enquire.
Bell Tower Tours
Visit the ringing chamber in the Cathedral bell tower for a demonstration of our bells and enjoy views across Grahamstown. These tours take place on dates throughout the year and will be detailed on the What’s On page. Access to the ringing chamber is up a narrow spiral staircase – a head for heights is recommended!
We regret we are unable to give Bell Tower tours at present. Watch this space!
