The Cathedral of St Michael and St George is lucky to have some of the best church music in South Africa. In addition to three brilliant resident organists (Peter Black, Dr Cameron Luke and Prof. Christopher Cockburn), the Cathedral boasts two choirs.
The Cathedral Choir consists of youngsters of school- and university-going age, many of whom get scholarships towards their education. You can hear them at the Sung Eucharist service every Sunday during term time.
The Makana Choir School is a Non-Profit Organisation whose purpose is to provide educational enrichment, academic support and supplementary tuition in music to the choristers of the Cathedral Choir. They are able to provide scholarships for deserving choristers at school or university.
The St Michael's Consort is an adult voluntary choir which sings Choral Evensong twice a month (usually the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month) in addition to special services for Ash Wednesday, the Feast of Pentecost, Remembrance Sunday, Advent Sunday and more. These services are livestreamed or recorded and published after the event on YouTube.
The Cathedral hosts monthly concerts which are free of charge, with donations welcome. These are also livestreamed or recorded for our YouTube channel.
